Epic Pictures Rides ‘The Wave’, Lands Rights To Justin Long-Donald Faison Sci-Fi Pic – Cannes
Epic Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to The Wave, a sci-fi film starring Justin Long and Donald Faison. Gille Klabin is making his feature directing debut on the pic, written by Carl W. Lucas. Epic will begin selling the film next week at the Cannes market.
Long plays Frank, who on the verge of a promotion takes a mysterious hallucinogenic drug that begins to tear down his reality and expose his life for what it really is. Tommy Flanagan, Bill Sage, Katia Winter, Sheila Vand and Ronnie Gene Blevins also star.
“This film was a tiny passion project Carl and I had dreamed of making over a series of weekends,” Klabin said. “It snowballed into a much bigger production than we ever dreamed possible but was always our little psychedelic baby. It is so overwhelmingly exciting that the film found its home with Epic Pictures, a company that champions the weird and wonderful works of cinema being made today.”
Lucas and Joshua Bunting of EchoWolf Productions (Field Guide To Evil) and Monte Young are producers.

Announcing the Groundbreaking Feature Film “MY NAME IS MYEISHA”
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Inspired by a nation’s headlines, MY NAME IS MYEISHA is the story of an all-too-common American tragedy told through uncommon cinematic language, with the profound intimacy experienced in sudden loss. This material blew me away from moment one, and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved.”
“This film is reflective of so many stories in our communities, stories of black lives cut short, black lives unfulfilled; stories that deserve to be told,” says Rickerby Hinds, producer and writer of the stageplay DREAMSCAPE, upon which the film is based. “If history has taught anything, it has taught us that if we want our stories told with accuracy and compassion: it is up to us to tell them, to write them, to produce them, to support them. Cortez will premiere at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival November 11. Get your tickets now!
After a canceled tour, ailing, semi-famous musician Jesse seeks out Anne, an old flame in Cortez, a tiny mountain town in New Mexico. When he knocks on her door, a ten-year old boy, bearing a strong resemblance to Jesse, answers. Inspired by the great American relationship dramas of the 1970’s and 1980’s, Cheryl Nichols’s evocative film is a classic story of love and redemption. It’s a story about how the life we plan is never as rewarding as the life that surprises us.
Writer-director Cheryl Nichols turns in one of the most exciting feature film debuts of the year, co-written with her fellow leading actor, Arron Shiver. In their crowd-funding campaign, they wrote: “We want to make films that are connected, honest, sincere; that explore our humanity, however ugly or dirty.” Legendary stage, screen, and television actress Judith Ivey jumped aboard this project, which heralds the arrival of a major new directing talent. EchoWolf Productions announces “Fender Bender”
Shout! Factory is best known for its exhaustive compilations of Golden Age television shows, comedy legends retrospectives and celebrations of everything from the avant garde to the iconic. Past projects have encapsulated everything from shows like “The Dick Cavett Show” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000” to showcases of Mel Brooks and Steve Martin.
But the media company isn’t just content with providing handsomely appointed box sets perfect for nostalgic binge watching. It’s moving into producing its own content and it’s decided on its first project, a horror thriller titled “Fender Bender.” The film is described as a throwback to the horror films of the 1980s — a time when homicidal maniacs like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees routinely terrorized hapless teens.
“Over the last few years we’ve built up credibility with these fans,” said Jordan Fields, the company’s head of acquisitions. “We know this audience. We know where they live and what they love.”
Shout! Factory will develop, finance and executive produce the film and plans to go into production this year in New Mexico. Casting is currently underway and the picture will be written and directed by Mark Pavia (“The Night Flier”).
Going forward, it hopes to produce one or two films annually.
“We’re hoping that it’s the first of many,” said Shout! Factory founder Garson Foos. “We have been in discussions and negotiations on other original projects, but ideally we’d like to get this one finished before we greenlight another one.”
Shout! Factory has rolled out a few films theatrically, so it has some experience on that kind of distribution. However, the company has decided whether or not it will release “Fender Bender” in theaters, as well as on home entertainment platforms.
“It’s a natural progression for us and it’s very much in that sweet spot of genre films that we’re known for,” said Shout! Factory founder Bob Emmer. “We want to create something that broadens the scope of what we’re doing and gives us a property we fully control.”
Nadia Redler (“Fear X”) and Brainstorm Media’s Meyer Shwarzstein will also executive produce the film with Shout! Factory. Carl W. Lucas (“The Signal”) and Joshua Bunting (“The Blackout”) of EchoWolf Productions will be producers, with Fields and Shout’s Gus Krieger serving as co-producers.

ILEGALES Wins Two More Awards
We’re extremely pleased to announce that ILEGALEShas won two awards at the Naperville Independent Film Festival, where it was nominated for a total of four awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
Our lead actor, Luis Bordonada, won Best Actor for his portrayal of Ariel Vargas, a day laborer who works in the cotton fields of New Mexico. Luis Bordonada’s parents brought him to the U.S. illegally as a child, so he’s lived many of the experiences that ILEGALES touches on. Lately, Luis has appeared in The Book of Eli, A Bakery Story, and can be seen in the upcoming feature The Reunion. Additionally, he has done theater productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream andThe Tempest, television commercials for Showtime Networks, and hosted an entertainment program called Remix TV.
ILEGALES’ director, Ric Dupont, took home the statuette for Best Director. ILEGALES marks Ric Dupont’s directorial debut. Prior to ILEGALES, he worked on short films, documentary and reality television production, as well as television news for the last 14 years. Working in the media gave him firsthand exposure to the desperation and poverty of many in Mexico. With this film, he sought to capture the sharp contrast between American and Mexican perspectives on border issues and immigration.
Many congratulations to both Ric and Luis, we’re so happy for them. Stay tuned for more information about ILEGALES, which we hope to be able to make public very soon!
